MARINE ALONSO, María de los Ángeles; GARCIA MELIAN, Maricel y GUELMES GARCIA, Hilda Beatriz. Utilization of environmental indicators for the prevention of dengue in Old Havana. Rev Cubana Hig Epidemiol [online]. 2005, vol.43, n.2. ISSN 0253-1751.
The objective of the present paper was to test environmental indicators for the prevention of dengue in the municipality of Old Havana, in Havana City. Five environmental indicators were used, for which availability, quality and comparability of the data in space and time were evaluated. A descriptive study was conducted during 12 cycles with the same number of days each at 2 stages of the assurance phase of the antivectorial campaign in 2002 and 2004, respectively. All the health areas of the municipality under study were included. Data were available for most of the indicators. The main limitations affecting their quality were identified and they were comparable in space and time. The worst results were attained in the sewage indicator for more than 7 days. The health areas with the worst environmental quality in this municipality were "Robert Manuel Zulueta", "Diego Tamayo" and "Angel Arturo Aballí".
