Abstract

SEUC, Armando H.  and  DOMINGUEZ, Emma. About the estimation of burden of disease morbidity. Rev Cubana Hig Epidemiol [online]. 2005, vol.43, n.3. ISSN 0253-1751.

This paper was aimed at presenting a comprehensive coherent overview of the concepts and processes involved in the estimation of burden of disease morbidity through summary measures of population health, in particular a "health gap" type measure known as DALYs. Each of these concepts and processes had already been individually analyzed in detail in a number of previous papers; however, their concatenation to accomplish the final objective was often neglected. This paper also set forth the general implementation of this methodology to estimate the burden of morbidity in Cuba in 2000, using a particular summary measure of population health, that is, DALYs for a selected group of six diseases. This paper is based on several studies by the World Health Organization, which have estimated the global burden of diseases in different regions of the world for the last few years. Finally, it stated the need of delving into the study and eventual application of this sort of indicators, given the growing interest in our country of improving the population's quality of life and identifying and solving those health problems that mostly affect it.

Keywords : Burden of morbidity; summary measures of population health.
