Abstract

GARCIA MELIAN, Maricel et al. The Cuban experience in the health impact assessment of investment projects. Rev Cubana Hig Epidemiol [online]. 2005, vol.43, n.3. ISSN 0253-1751.

The Cuban experience in the health impact assessment of investment projects, as part of the process of environmental impact evaluation, was described. An analysis was made of amethodology comprising the following phases: identification of health risks, identification of potential impacts in health determinants, and the determination of potential human exposure to environmental perils. On the basis of the three phase scores, a qualitative assessment of risks was made in addition to evaluating the acceptability of each impact. The methodology has the following advantages: rapid implementation, necessary feasible data for the study and low cost. For the introduction in health practice, the methodology has been published in the form of a manual that is now used in undergraduate and graduate medical education in Cuba.

Keywords : Health impact; risk assessment; investment projects.
