International literature on electromagnetic fields and health is controversial. In Cuba, the situation is characterized by a few investigations on this regard and by an increasing trend of deaths and of infantile leukemia incidence rates in Havana City, with a differentiated echological structure between the eastern and western municipalities of the capital. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the possible association between the residential exposure to electromagnetic fields due to the existence of high power lines and the risk for suffering from leukemia during childhood in Havana City from 1996 to 2000. An epidemiological case control study matched by age, sex and educational center was undertaken. The attributable causes and the control of the confounding factors were determined. The universe was composed of the total of children diagnosed with the disease in Metropolitan Havana and, specifically, in the municipalities of La Lisa , Playa, Marianao, Cerro, Centro Habana and Plaza as a study group. Data were obtained from the National Cancer Register of the Institute of Oncology and Radiotherapy. The analysis of multiple correspodences allowed to simplify the structure of the variables of the electromagnetic field. The discriminating analysis made possible to classify cases and controls and to identify risk factors by using the conditional and unconditional logistic regression. The electromagnetic environment was different in cases and controls. A minimum of variables, among which some corresponding to the electromagnetic field predominated, made distinctions between cases and controls. Variables of the electromagnetic field were identified as risk factors for the appearance of leukemia.
