Alkyl cyanoacrylates are the basis for surgical, industrial or domestic adhesives. Its bacteriological property has been poorly studied and thus, literature is scarce and old-fashioned, with conflicting results occasionally. Several publications state that they are bacteriostatic or self-sterile whereas others have detected contamination. Knowing the limitations of this property is very important so as to decide upon the degree of sterility required for adhesive manufacture and the necessary steps for their application. The main objective of this paper was to comparatively study the characteristics as bacteriostatic of a made-in-Cuba adhesive and of a commercial product. For this end, the conventional methods of microorganism culture in slides and of the bacterial growth analysis were followed. It was shown in both adhesives that bacteriostatical characteristic is not generalized since it varies depending on the used strain but it seems to be associated with its biotransformation.
