Abstract

GUZMAN PINEIRO, Raisa et al. A case-control study on childhood leukemia risk factors in the City of Havana province. Rev Cubana Hig Epidemiol [online]. 2007, vol.45, n.1. ISSN 0253-1751.

Before controversial finding in literature, research studies were conducted on the relation of low frequency electromagnetic fields and health. The objective was to evaluate the possible association of residential exposure to high-power line electromagnetic fields and the risk of suffering leukemia in childhood in the City of Havana province from 1995 to 2000. The universe of study was the total number of children diagnosed with this disease. The environmental component of the study allowed exploring the relations between rates of disease and territorial electrification indexes. The case-control component served to precise over attributable causes and to control confounding factors. An equal number of matched individuals 1:1 of the same age, school and sex was randomly selected as a control group. Data were collected from the National Register of Cancer of the Institute of Oncology and Radiological Therapy. The bias factors were mobility of the resident, memory, perversion of the course of justice and junctural factors. Electromagnetic fields would act as risk factors for childhood leukemia according to the results of a regression analysis at environmental scale and to the case-control study because of multiple correspondence, discriminatory analysis and logistic regression. Smoking, pregnancy, history of cancer in distant relatives and exposure to environmental toxic products

Keywords : Electromagnetic fields,; high-power line; electrics reds,; transformathors; cancer; leukemia; obaco; environmental toxic; pregnancy..
