Abstract

The results of the implementation of a strategy to improve training in environmental health risk assessment and management in Cuba, with a new problem-focused, community-based holistic, transdisciplinary approach based on interactive methods were provided. The National Institute for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology's environmental health teaching program was upgraded and this experience was transferred to the Higher Institutes of Medical Sciences in Villa Clara and Santiago de Cuba provinces respectively. The main activities were upgrading and decentralization of the Environmental Health Master´s Degree and Diploma courses; development of courses and workshops for professors, working out of teaching materials, design of new curricula for Bachelor of Health Technology career and the creation of the National Network for Environmental Health.. Four hundred and fifty six Cuban professionals and 73 technicians from other Latin America countries were trained.
