OBJECTIVE: to stress those aspects that has characterized the training of Hygiene and Epidemiology specialists in the country, to recognize the importance of the present formative strategy for the service, and to provide elements to face a process with quality. DEVELOPMENT: the theoretical aspects related to postgraduate education, the teaching-services integration, the new transformations and the quality in the educative process, were dealt with. Information on the antecedents of the training of hygienists and epidemiologists and on the elements characterizing their curricula was given. It was also analyzed how important it is for the service to assume the accelerated training of specialists capable of acting as health specialists before complex health problems. CONCLUSIONS: some difficulties to be solved to assure the quality of the process were mentioned.
