Introduction: The water quality for hemodialysis is essential in the prevention of clinical complications in the patients. Objectives: To design a methodological tool to improve he surveillance of water health quality used for hemodialysis in Cuba. Methods: Authors worked out a checking list to identify the dangers for the quality of the water in treatment plants existing in the hemodialysis units from the guidelines of data collection, of documents review and of observance of environmental features applied in a project developed in he National Institute of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology (NIHEM) in 2009 including the characterization of water treatment plants for hemodialysis. Results: The above mentioned list included elements of environmental conditions, procedures, human resources and equipments with 59 elements for evaluation. It was applied in three water treatment plants obtaining goods results. Conclusions: This list is useful to identify the environmental dangers in water treatment plants to minimize its impacts on water health quality.
