Present paper is a cross-sectional study conducted to identify the visual problems in the students of an urban basic secondary school from the Habana Vieja municipality during the 2002-2003 courses. All study students (1 129 corresponding to the total of students) underwent the visual acuity measurement using the Snellen's chart graduated of different letters and analysis of learning level. In screening performed in this school, the 37.0% of students showed visual alterations being referred to Ophthalmology specialists due to visual deficits. They were diagnosed with specific affections among the more frequent is the combination of hypermetropia and astigmatism in the 12.8%, followed by myopia and astigmatism in the 5.3% and in third place there was present the hypermetropia with a 4.6%. From the 376 adolescents presenting with learning problems, the 45% has ophthalmological disorders. Results are showed in statistic tables and graphs. The high percentage of students with visual acuity deficit and the association among the visual problems and the low educational performance, suggest that it is essential to perform systematically ophthalmologic studies in students of different levels of the educational system to detect and to solve in time the problems that could interfere in its subsequent learning.
