Description and analysis are provided of concepts central to the theoretical body supporting the proposal of the notion of institutional documentary heritage and the importance of building a collection comprising the institution's document heritage. Development of a digital collection comprising the heritage production at the National Institute of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology, is a need to improve availability, access, dissemination and preservation of the information and knowledge produced throughout the years at this outstanding Cuban scientific institution.
