Diabetes Mellitus is a well-recognized risk factor that worsens periodontal disease. Aimed at determining the possible relation between this disease and loss of teeth a descriptive and cross-sectional research was conducted with a test group and a control one using a sample of 42 diabetic-elderly patients (test group) and 42 non-diabetic patients (control group), belonging to No- 272 Doctor's Office at "Guama" Dentist's Clinic, "Turcios Lima" health area, Pinar del Rio during the second term of 2008. The chi-squared test and percentage value were used as statistical methods. The majority of the elderly belonged to the group of ages 60 to 69; presenting a poor dental hygiene in diabetic 21 (50, 0%), and similar to non-diabetic 19 (45, 2%). Loss of teeth prevailed in diabetic being toothless in the maxillary 12 (28, 5%) and 21 (50%) toothless in the jaw. Gingivitis was the most frequent periodontal disease found 17 (43, 5%) showing a higher incidence in diabetic patients 11 (28,2%). The 90,4% of the diabetic patients needed dentures, the majority of them needed total dentures 29 (76, 3%).
