MARTINEZ ARGUDIN, Xiomara Elsa; DUARTE DUARTE, Yamina; PORTALES GIL, Elizabeth  and  MIRABAL MARTINEZ, Grisell. Epidemiological study of infantile epilepsy in Bahia Honda municipality. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2011, vol.15, n.1, pp.76-88. ISSN 1561-3194.

The epilepsy is a chronic disease of diverse etiology, having a worldwide distribution with heterogenic features depending on the population affected. Objective: to know about the main clinical- epidemiological characteristics of the disease. Method: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional research of infantile epilepsy in Bahia Honda municipality, Pinar del Rio. Through this research a clinical-epidemiological characterization of epileptic children living in the territory was conducted; which allowed applying a questionnaire to parents and legal tutors of the epileptic children at "Manuel Gonzalez Diaz" and "Pablo de la Torriente Brau" Outpatient Clinics. To collect the necessary data and to process the information descriptive statistics was used; besides a summary of qualitative, quantitative variables and chi square test to perform the correlation of variables. Results: the prevalence rate was 4,12/1000 inhabitants, age bracket 5 to15 years old prevailing male sex. The onset of the epilepsy started before the age of 5 (82, 5%), general crisis showed more frequency (57,5%), tonic-clonic crisis prevailed. Among the etiological factors perinatal causes (52, 5%), hypoxia, prematurity and low weight at birth were more frequent. Conclusions: characterizing epilepsy in the territory will increase knowledge about Primary Health Care in order to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life.
