Abstract

Scientific research has been a major element influencing on the life quality of the Cuban population, achieving results health standards as those found in the developed world. Health research in Pinar del Rio Province show its first steps during the years 1968 -1978, early decade of the Medical Teaching Program in the Province, and it has had and increasing evolution as that observed in human resources. The aim of this paper has been to show the historical evolution of the process of the Scientific Research in Health Sciences in this province. Documentary methods, interviews to key professionals and data bases of Departments in the Pinar del Rio University of Medical Sciences were used. It is shown that the historical process can be defined in four stages, having nowadays an increasing trend to visibility and pertinence for the scientific research as a substantive process of the University, and a gradual perfectioning of its management, showed by the increasing number of research projects, published papers, awards and in the upgrading of the scientific level of researchers.
