Introduction: current Cuban Higher Medical Education has reached qualitative and quantitative advances in all aspects of the teaching, health care and research process, going to a new stage with the “universalization of university”. Objective: to relate the link of university-society by means of the knowledge family doctors and diabetic population have about the disease. Methods: a qualitative cross sectional study at “Hermanos Cruz” outpatient teaching clinic that included 22 family doctors and 91 diabetic type-2 patients. A differential survey to both groups was applied and the current medical syllabuses about diabetes mellitus were revised. Results: the totality of family doctors considered the need to update on treatments, hypoglycemia, physical exercise and diabetes as well as psychological help, more than the half referred feet care to these kinds of patients and vascular complications. The most frequent complications were nephropathy, retinopathy, diabetic neuropathy and cardiovascular disorders; investigating about the orientations the family doctors offered about the disease, more than the half said it was good. Conclusion: the relation university-society should be strengthened to achieve a greater preparation in the medical care of diabetic patients, redounding to a better quality of life.
