LINARES GUERRA, Elisa Maritza et al. Changes provoked by antiretroviral therapy over some biochemical indicators of the nutritional status in people suffering from HIV/AIDS. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2011, vol.15, n.4, pp.8-21. ISSN 1561-3194.
Aimed at determining the changes provoked by antiretroviral therapy (ARVT) over some biochemical indicators of the nutritional status in people suffering from HIV/AIDS an observational, analytic and cross-sectional study was carried out in Pinar de Rio Province. The study was comprised of 142 individuals, out of them 89 before receiving the ARVT (24 women and 65 men), and 53 undergoing ARVT. Serum of the patients was used to determine the concentrations of albumin, transferrin, glucose, creatinine, triglycerides, and total cholesterol using the computerized chemical analyzer HITACHI 902. Means of both groups of patients were compared through the Mann Whitney U Test. No differences were found in means obtained for serum albumin levels (p=0.141), transferrin (p=0.196) and glucose (p=0.59) when both groups were compared. Triglyceride levels and cholesterol significantly increased in the group of patients (HIV/AIDS) using antiretroviral therapy (1.29±0.82 vs. 1.98±1.49 [p=0.0004] for triglycerides and 3.95±1.03 vs. 4.55±1.15 [p=0.003] for cholesterol). It is concluded that ARVT diminishes the risk of malnutrition according to the biochemical indicators under study, but increases the risk of hyperlipemia.
