CHAVEZ REYES, María Teresa; MARTIN SANCHEZ, Omar M.; CRESPO TOLEDO, Yamirka  y  BAEZ PEREZ, Olga L.. Outcomes and social costs of the endoscopic examination. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2011, vol.15, n.4, pp. 32-40. ISSN 1561-3194.

Introduction: the esophageal-duodenal endoscopy is performed for diagnostic and therapeutic ends and it is a very expensive health service all over the world. Objective: to assess the social cost and health outcomes of the endoscopic examination at «Parroquia Escume» in Venezuela. Method: a descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional study, where the target group was comprised of 810 patients attending to the service from August 2005 to August 2007. Among the variables analyzed were: the origin of the order, diagnosis and present bad habits. The study constituted a partial cost-effective assessment where social costs were taken into account regarding transportation and health outcomes as well. Data were collected from the Department of Endoscopy at Comprehensive Care Center and from a semi-structured interview to patients, along with the information gathered at «Maria Edelmira Araujo» Clinic and Community Pharmacy. Results: the unitary cost of 1200 Bs by transportation; whereas the performance cost and the medications meant a saving of 97 337 700 Bs. Among the results in health care stood out: alleviation of symptoms, a correct diagnosis and a high rate of satisfaction in patients' quality of life improvement.
