Resumen

A descriptive, cross-sectional research, kind of prevalence studies aimed at characterizing the behavior of periodontal disease in patients from 25 to 59 years old dispensarized as diabetic in an area of a Basic Group of Work-1 was conducted at "Pedro Borras Astorga" from September 2009 to July 2010. The target group (n=135) was comprised of diabetic patients of both sexes and in the ages mentioned using an intentional sampling, and the sample (n=92) that included the patients who suffered from periodontal diseases undergoing oral examination after the application of the Oral Revised Hygiene Index and the Russell's Periodontal Index (revised form). Variables of age, sex, education, natural history of the disease, the degree of oral hygiene and the degree of periodontal affectation. SPSS program, version 10.0 was applied as a statistical processing. The statistical analysis of data was carried out using measures of summary to the qualitative variables (rates, reasons and proportions). Results showed a high prevalence of periodontal disease, associated significantly with a deficient oral hygiene, patients suffering from diabetes for 10 or more years prevailed and advanced gingivitis showed the highest relevance.
