Abstract

CASTILLO VALDES, Leydelys et al. Most frequent alterations of the oral communication in children presenting perinatal risk factors. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2012, vol.16, n.2, pp.75-93. ISSN 1561-3194.

This research paper was carried out in the office of Neurological Development belonging to "Ramon Gonzalez Coro" Gynecological-Obstetric Hospital in Plaza, Havana City through 2008-2009. A sample of 93 children that presented perinatal risk factors at birth having criteria of inclusion was included to determine the most common alterations of oral communication. A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted taking the data from the clinical history of speech therapy. The main results showed that 51 children from the total of the sample presented speech difficulties, the most frequent were: delayed speech development and dyslalia, which difficulties were most frequent associated with the risk factors of prematurity, mechanical ventilation, low-weight at birth and seizures. From the total of the sample, 49 children presented more risk factors at birth, out of them 34 suffered from speech disorders. Conclusion: the presence of biological risk factors was the only positive piece of information in children presenting primary-delayed speech; which can be related to its etiology, the speech therapist assessed the speech disorders in this group of children at late ages in the majority of the cases.
