Introduction: Sepsis is an extremely frequent and severe entity. In Cuba, pediatric morbidity is significant, where community-acquired sepsis prevail, followed by nosocomial and neonatal sepsis; increasing hospital costs, stay and mortality. In adults: the third part dies as a cause of sepsis. Objective: to improve competence and performance of medical doctors working at municipal Intensive Care Units, Pinar del Rio in 2011. Method: analytical, with both retrospective plus prospective components, cohort and longitudinal study. The training course was designed together with the evaluative tests. An educational intervention about: diagnosis, physiopathology and management of severe sepsis. The assessment of knowledge of the medical doctors in the intensive care areas before and after the implementation of the educational intervention, as well as the modification of quality indicators (medical care of patients with sepsis), after the training course. Results: medical doctors; 44,5% had more than 5 years experience of specialist, 16,7% had received training courses about sepsis management. Initial examination: 33,3% fair and 38,9 bad. Final examination: 50% good and 33,3% excellent. Improvements on the appropriated use of antibiotics and early beginning of antibiotic therapy were observed. Conclusion: Doctors having not much experience in emergency care areas who had not received postgraduate studies in sepsis management (>50%), an increase of knowledge about sepsis management after the training course was observed. The efficacy of the educational intervention to improve the conditions of patients suffering from severe sepsis in provincial emergency services increased the indicators of quality in the medical management of sepsis in municipal intensive care units.
