Abstract

BERNARDES CARBALLO, Kety; SANCHEZ HERNANDEZ, Deysi Lucía; HERNANDEZ AMARAN, Liset  and  ARCIA CONIL, Raisa Cristina. Application of Florence Nightingale’s theory to an old patient suffering from bronchial asthma. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2012, vol.16, n.4, pp.3-12. ISSN 1561-3194.

In the history of nursing specialty existed a great number of theories that contributed to the new basics of the nursing care in patients suffering from chronic diseases, where unfavorable environments can constitute a risk factor that can trigger for a disease worsening; this was described by the theory of Florence Nightingale, who recognized the special significance of the environment as an essential factor influencing on people’s health. A descriptive study aimed at relating the theory of Florence Nightingale to a true situation of an old, female, asthmatic patient who belonged to N-1 Doctor’s Office at “Pedro Borras Astorga” University Outpatient Clinic was conducted on January 2012 in Pinar del Rio. The information needed was collected from a visit to the patient’s house. The patient was interviewed, revising her clinical history; the study was supported on the letters of Florence Nightingale together with the review of other secondary more recent theories, those who have developed their own theories and models from the logical thinking of Florence Nightingale. Some alterations regarding the surroundings where the patient’s house was located were first identified by Florence Nightingale as elements influencing on the subject’s health. Education of health was offered to the asthmatic patient in order to better the environmental conditions; avoiding this way the onset of further emergencies of the chronic disease.
