Introduction: The quality of higher education graduates must be seen with a comprehensive approach; competences include a fusion of attitudes, values, knowledge and skills in a socioeconomic environment that is specific to the employment of each student. A descriptive, cross-sectional study with qualitative and quantitative approach was conducted. Objective: To assess the behavior of specific nursing competences in Neonatology Service at "Abel Santamaria Cuadrado" University Hospital in Pinar del Rio during 2011. Material and method: modelling, induction-deduction, historical-logic plus theoretical procedures such as: analysis and synthesis were used throughout this research. Using at the same time empirical inquiries: a survey, questionnaires of knowledge, observation sheet and semi-structured interviews. The target group was comprised of 42 Bachelors of Science in Nursing coinciding with the sample chosen. Results: Working experience of nursing personnel in Neonatology Service is minor than 5 years, the majority passed postgraduate studies; results of the questionnaire of knowledge were satisfactory, observing needs of learning related to epicutaneous catheter technique, newborn resuscitation and application of scientific method. Conclusions: inadequacies in the application of nursing techniques were evident which sustain the need of implementing postgraduate courses or diploma courses to the professional improvement of nursing personnel.
