This article is aimed at presenting a theoretical basis for the development of research skills in medical students. A search of literature related to the topic was carried out along with the documentaries that control this process, which included the syllabus of Medical Studies, professional model, methodological file and methodological curricular strategy of research skills in Medical Studies. The process of developing research skills is conducted by means of conscious processes starting from its planning towards the man of future and approaching to the social reality, environment and comprehensive development of personality, mainly determined by the socio-historical experience, where the activity and place inside the action constitute the main component of the skill or skills to be developed. During the process to develop skills, the professor should know of the functional structure of the skill as a methodological model, allowing the display of the skill in the operations and relating it to each of the components involve in the teaching-learning process inevitably.
