Abstract

Introduction: cardiovascular diseases are found among the first causes of death. Objective: to determine the category of cardiovascular diseases in patients from 40 to 75 years old belonging to “Luis Augusto Turcios Lima” University Outpatient Clinic. Pinar del Rio municipality in 2010. Material and Method: descriptive and cross-sectional study. Target group: all patients from 40 to 75 years old of the health area and the sample comprised 300 people chosen by poly-phases or complex sampling. Variables: demography, toxic habits, systolic blood pressure, weight, size, glycemia and total cholesterol. Absolute and relative frequency was calculated determining global cardiovascular risk of each subject using the risk-qualifier from World Health Organization. Results: 72% of people presented low global risk of cardiovascular disease, fewer in men that increased as they get older; between 2 and 5% of the population was identified as prone to develop a major cardiovascular disease in the next ten years. Conclusions: the category of cardiovascular risk was classified as low in the majority of the population included in the study, prevailing among the risk factors: smoking, systolic hypertension and hypercholesterolemia, identifying a reduced number of population to develop a major cardiovascular disease in the next ten years.
