Abstract

Introduction: dental traumas are injuries generated in teeth, bone and the other support tissues as a consequence of a physical impact; the preservation of dental tissues constitutes the main objective of this case. Objective: to characterize clinical-epidemiological behavior of dental traumas in urban schools in San Juan y Martinez municipality. Material and method: a descriptive and cross-sectional research was conducted in the urban schools of San Juan y Martinez municipality during 2010; the target group was comprised of 1772 patients, ages from 7 to 14 and the sample of 82 students with dental traumas was also included, using a non-probabilistic sampling of opinions. The totally of children were examined and a questionnaire was applied to those affected by trauma, assessing different parameters. Results: considering the ages in study (from 7 up to 14 years old), out of the 1772 patients examined, 82 were reported having one or more dental traumas (4,63%), ages between 10-14 represented 7,26% and 5,42% respectively. On the other hand, male was the most affected sex (61%) with 50 patients, female sex only added 32 cases (39%). Male patients from 10-14 years old showed the major figures of traumas with 13 and 11 respectively. Conclusions: clinical-epidemiological behavior of dental traumas in the urban schools of San Juan y Martinez municipality, Pinar del Rio prevailed among 10 and 14 year-old male patients, non complicated fractures of the crown and the infraction were the most frequent traumas, as well as vestibuloversion, bilabial incompetence and the practice of sports as the most predisposing factors.
