Abstract

CORO CARRASCO, Zoraya. Knowledge and ways of family performance of schoolchildren suffering from bronchial asthma. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2013, vol.17, n.4, pp.11-23. ISSN 1561-3194.

Introduction: in the management of bronchial asthma it is important to achieve the control of the disease in order to reach a better quality of life of patients and family, where health education is the mainstay. Objective: to assess the influence of family over the severity of bronchial asthma in schoolchildren classified as: persistent severe asthma. Material and method: an explanatory, observational, case-control, cross-sectional research was conducted at “Pedro Borras” health area in Pinar del Rio municipality from January 2007 to July 2008. The target group and the sample were comprised of asthmatic schoolchildren, 26 patients suffering from severe- persistent bronchial asthma and the control group with the same quantity of patients, but not presenting severe-persistent bronchial asthma. Results: the group of patients with severe-persistent bronchial asthma (92%) had not sufficient knowledge of bronchial asthma; 88.8% did not follow the environmental control measures; 50% did not fulfil inter-crisis treatment and 76.9% used inhalator technique the wrong way. Conclusions: deficient knowledge related to bronchial asthma was associated with chronic natural history of the disease, verifying a relation of dependence among the severity of the disease and ways of family performance concerning: not accomplishment of environmental control measures, wrong preventive pharmacological treatment of the crisis and wrong inhalation technique (p< 0,05).
