Introduction: infertility is worldwide recognized as a medical-social problem of reproductive health, Cuba is not an exception. Objective: to characterize the infertility in Pinar del Rio municipality. Method: a retrospective-longitudinal and descriptive study was carried out with 118 infertile couples attending to the municipal medical office during 2010-2012 in Pinar del Rio. The variables analyzed were: age, time and type of infertility, causes and related infections. Data obtained were grouped in simple tables, to its analysis, methods of descriptive statistics and qualitative variables were summed up considering absolute and relative percentages, calculating the mean for the age of the group and its standard deviation. Results: out of the total of 118 couples studied, 28 women got pregnant, to a rate of 23,7% prevailing secondary infertility, female causes prevailed in 56 women (47,5%), followed by mixed causes. The greatest number of patients were between 20 and 34 years old, representing 80,5% of the total of the sample. More than the half 55,1% had at least one abortion and 35,6% did not have children. Candida ssp was the most frequent etiological cause of genital infection in female (37,9%), followed by oligoasthenozoospermia (21,6%), found in male infertility. Conclusions: infertility in the couples studied was mainly found in best ages for reproduction, prevailing secondary infertility, history of abortion and genital infections are still the most important mainstay in female sex and oligoasthenozoospermia the main cause of infertility in this research paper.
