Abstract

Introduction: the importance of ultrasound lies not only in the variety of tissues and organs than can be explored, but also in its efficacy with cost-benefit. Objective: to assess the social impact of diagnostic ultrasound in Pinar del Rio municipality during 2009-2011. Method: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional and applied research with a target group and the sample included 43914 patients who were examined during 3 years. To process data and to carry out the statistical analysis a univariable and bivariable design was used to cerate a database in Access® and the statistical package SPSS 14.0®. Results: the number of patients examined has gradually increased by years of services up to a total of 43914 (100%), prevailing “Raul Sanchez” Outpatient Clinic with 33% of the cases, despite the redistribution in 2011. The most requested diagnostic ultrasounds were: digestive tract 61,8%, obstetric 53,2%, gynecologic 42,1% and  genitourinary system 38,1%, the average waiting time (46% of them) lasted less than 30 minutes. Diagnostic impressions matched up with ultrasonographic findings 45,1%. Quality and resolution have reached more than 90%. The unitary cost of the ultrasound finally decreased. Satisfaction degree was 91,4%. Conclusions: the social impact of diagnostic ultrasound in Pinar del Rio municipality was achieved, considering the quality and assistance to these patients, offering them an early diagnose according to their needs along with a better use of medical resources.
