Introduction: Writing scientific papers today is a problem affecting most of the professionals when they have to spread or communicate the results of their researches, to keep the international scientific community updated regarding new discoveries. Objective: to provide healthcare professionals with the most important elements to be considered in writing scientific articles. Method: a bibliographic review of different articles, books and pamphlets related to scientific writing and structure was performed to determine those fundamentals to follow for writing scientific texts. We also took into account the experience of the authors, as expressed in the editorial process of the Pinar del Río Journal of Medical Sciences, an exquisite source for, from the main signs recorded in the files of this department, determining any irregularity present in the act of writing a scientific article. Conclusions: the scientific paper is the communication medium of choice of the scientific community and, to write it correctly, one has to write with adherence to the rules of language, but one also must keep in mind the peculiarities of scientific language.
