Introduction: over time maternal breast-feeding has constituted the feeding practice assuring the survival of the human race and its advantages are very well known. Objective: to characterize the behavior of breastfeeding in adolescent mothers. Material and methods: a descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out on the behavior of breastfeeding adolescent mothers in medical office Libertad II, District 6 of Pampa de la Isla Zone, Santa Cruz de la Sierra City, Bolivia, in the period from July 2011 to July 2012. The universe consisted of 61 adolescent mothers. The sample selection was performed using an opinion sampling, taking into account expert judgments, being composed of 53 adolescent mothers who met the criteria for inclusion or exclusion. Results: there was a predominance of adolescents mothers aged 18-19 years, with secondary schooling. The highest percentage of them breast-fed for 1 to 3 months. House-wives represented the most in the studied group of adolescents. Conclusions: the greatest incidence of diseases was found in acute respiratory infections, followed by acute diarrheal diseases and skin lesions, predominating in adolescent who breast-fed less than one month. Generally speaking, there are no psychosocial conditions to face responsibilities derived from having a child at these ages.
