Introduction:
falls are one of the most important geriatric syndromes due to the high incidence in this sector of the population and the repercussions they have on the quality of life of the elderly, the family and society.
Objective:
to identify the socio-demographic characteristics of the elderly who had falls at Hermanos Cruz health area in Pinar del Río.
Methods:
descriptive and cross-sectional study of old people diagnosed as having falls in the chosen health area in 2018, using theoretical, empirical and statistical methods.
Results:
15,7 % of the elderly had falls, most of them of male gender (6,8 %), and between 60 and 70 years old. The risk factors that most influenced were suffering from multiple pathologies and polypharmacy. The main consequences were physical.
Conclusions:
the falls of the elderly are an important public health problem in the community with a trend to worsen with the high rate of demographic aging; as a result it is necessary to know the socio-demographic characteristics for its prevention.
