Introduction:

the study of mortality rate has several topics for its approach, including the causes of death, but it is significant to have a deeper analysis to which deaths are analyzed by social stratum and educational level in Medellín during 2016.

Objective:

to analyze the death rate in the city of Medellín from seven groups of causes of death on the CIE 10 list, distributing the death rate by causes, according to the socioeconomic strata and level of education.

Methods:

this is a descriptive-quantitative study that takes into account the variables of social stratification based on the neighborhood codes of 16 communes, and the levels of education from the preschool level to the doctorate degree; in addition analyzing the correlation between educational level and social stratum according to death rates.

Results:

lower social strata have higher number of deaths than upper social strata, likewise the basic educational levels from preschool to secondary are to a greater extent related to deaths in the lower social strata, while the postgraduate professional levels have a higher number of deaths in the upper social strata, and the highest proportion of causes of death are in the circulatory-disease groups and tumors in all strata.

Conclusions:

vital statistics should be a tool of high precision and its information of high standards is useful in order to carry out in-depth studies regarding the dynamics and characteristics of the population in the present analysis of mortality rate.
