Resumo

Introduction:

high blood pressure is one of the nosological entities having more negative repercussions in geriatric populations, requiring of an adequate management and control by the healthcare personnel.

Objective:

to determine the behavior of the medication adherence and the quality of life of the hypertensive older adults from the Number 37 and 45 Doctors’ Offices at Dr. Modesto Gomez Rubio Polyclinic in San Juan y Martinez municipality during 2020.

Methods:

an observational, analytical and cross-sectional study conducted with a sample of 199 hypertensive older adults. The application of instruments and review of medical-familial and individual histories allowed collecting information to give response to the variables studied, applying a univariate and bivariate analysis of them. Ethical-medical principles were met.

Results:

male sex (50,8 %) and 65-69 age group (26,6 %) predominated, showing 51,3 % of them medication adherence, associating this variable to (p<0,05), age, sex, marital status, among others; the presence of polypharmacy, the level of knowledge concerning hypertension and the activities of daily livings. The 43,7 % of the older adults presented a moderate quality of life, showing an association with sex (p=0,024), and the activities of daily livings (p<000,001).

Conclusions:

the presence of several factors, as much sociodemographic as those associated with the nosological entities, influence on the levels of medication adherence and on the quality of life of the older adults.
