ORRACA-CASTILLO, Odalys et al. Epidemiological examination of maternal and paternal genetic influences in asthma, Pinar del Rio province. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2022, vol.26, n.1  Epub 01-Jan-2022. ISSN 1561-3194.

Introduction:

asthma is a disease where genetic-environmental interactions are complex. Family history of asthma provides accurate information on the genetic role to the disease, therefore genetic and environmental factors are explored with the aim of demonstrating the differential influences of the parental genome on the onset of asthma in Pinar del Rio.

Objective:

to demonstrate the differential genetic influences of the parental genome on the onset of asthma in Pinar del Rio during the period 2015-2019.

Methods:

an analytical study of cases and controls was performed with several study designs of traditional and genetic epidemiology for the subsequent comparison of the genetic role between maternal and paternal line. Family history of asthma is used as genome information.

Results:

the proportion of family members with a history of asthma was higher in favor of the maternal line than the paternal line, except for the grandmother. Preferential family aggregation was evidenced for the maternal line for relatives of different grades in Pinar del Rio. In the case-control study design of genome-environment interaction, superior results were observed in favor of the maternal line with significant results in the parents, while in the case-case design; greater figures of interactions concerning the maternal line against paternal line were verified.

Conclusions:

from the perspective of genome function, it is unprecedented the exploration of maternal and paternal genetic influences as an approach to the epigenetic of the disease, where the maternal burden for asthma prevails in Pinar del Rio. Therefore, prevention should be emphasized in individuals with maternal family history of the disease.
