GARCIA-DIAZ, Celeste et al. Evaluation of cervical vertebrae as an indicator of bone maturation in children under 19 years of age. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2022, vol.26, n.5 Epub 01-Set-2022. ISSN 1561-3194.
ABSTRACT
Introduction:
biological maturation indicators allow determining the rhythm, development and individual growth and provide valuable information for the planning of medical treatments in several specialties.
Objective:
to identify the correlation between chronological age and bone age according to cervical maturation stages.
Methods:
cross-sectional, descriptive study in the period 2018-2020. Universe of 2198 patients aged between 7 and 18 years, attended in the Orthodontics service of the "Antonio Briones Montoto" Clinic, Pinar del Río. The sampling was intentional, non-probabilistic, and included 128 patients admitted to the service whose lateral teleradiographies of the skull were visible up to the fourth cervical vertebra, as inclusion criteria. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used, summarized with measures of central tendency and dispersion, calculation of Pearson coefficient, Student's t and non-parametric statistical tests with a significance level of 0,05.
Results:
the average age of the sample was 12 years, female sex predominated, a statistically significant relationship was found between the variables cervical bone maturation and the mean chronological age, the maximum peak of pubertal growth was found at the age of 13 years for females and 14 years for males, determining that females show earlier changes.
Conclusions:
Bone maturation can be evaluated through the cervical vertebrae in orthodontic patients, which allows for better quality patient care, avoids additional exposure to radiation and saves resources for the national health system.
