Introduction:
Hyrax type orthodontic appliance has been used in recent years to correct maxillary atresia. It is indicated in patients with transverse micrognathias of the maxilla and produces a rapid expansion of the maxilla.
Presentation of the case:
12 year old female patient, white, in good general condition, who attended the orthodontic consultation at the "Antonio Briones Montoto" Stomatology Clinic, presenting on clinical examination: Oval face, hypotonic upper lip, diminished lower third and convex profile, on intraoral examination he had a 4 mm protrusion, upper and lower dental crowding, disto-occlusion molar relationship on both sides, without being able to establish canine relationship, deep palatal vault, ogival palate with upper and lower dental macrodontia and total transverse micrognathias. He refers to digital sucking as a previous habit and paternal inheritance, with a tendency towards brachyfacial growth and skeletal alterations such as maxillary retrognathism.
Conclusions:
Maxillary expansion was performed as orthopedic treatment by means of a HYRAX type expander with the use of a Vite Hyrax® II screw from Dentaurum. Taking into account the transverse relationship of the maxilla, the growth trend and facial biotype, as well as the patient's collaboration, favorable therapeutic results were achieved and skeletal modifications of the maxilla in the three planes of space that favored dental repositioning and the adequate occlusal and facial relations obtained.
