VILLAR-BAHAMONDE, Andrés et al. Exploring the challenge of intestinal parasitism in childhood: An analysis of the situation in Pinar del Río. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2024, vol.28, n.2  Epub 01-Mar-2024. ISSN 1561-3194.

Introduction:

intestinal parasitosis is a public health problem that affects children worldwide, with particular incidence in regions with precarious hygienic and sanitary conditions. this phenomenon is of particular importance in children aged between 1 and 14 years, since, during this stage of development, the immune system is not yet fully mature, which makes them more vulnerable to parasitic infections.

Objective:

to provide a comprehensive view of the burden of intestinal parasitism in the infant population of Pinar del Río.

Methods:

an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, descriptive study was carried out in October 2023 in Pinar del Río province. The population of 83 thousand 779 children from 1 to 14 years of age registered in all the municipalities of the province in the middle of the year 2023.

Results:

in this research, we approached this problem from a multidisciplinary perspective, combining epidemiological, clinical and social aspects to understand the magnitude of intestinal parasitism in these children. Giardia lamblia, Enterobius vermicularis, Blastocystis spp., Endolimax nana and Entamoeba coli were the parasites with the highest relative frequency and San Juan y Martínez, Minas de Matahambre and San Luis.

Conclusions:

addressing intestinal parasitism in children in a comprehensive and multisectoral manner not only focuses on medical care, but also encompasses educational, hygiene and sanitary aspects to ensure a significant impact on the overall health and development of children.
