Introduction:
Diabetes Mellitus in the elderly not only causes deterioration in the quality of life, but also increases the demand and consumption of health services.
Objective:
to evaluate the quality of life in older adults with Diabetes Mellitus from medical office 12, Pedro Borrás Astorga University Polyclinic, Pinar del Río in the second semester of 2023.
Methods:
observational, descriptive and cross-sectional research, with a universe of 76 elderly and a simple random sample of 49 elderly people diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus. The variables studied were age, time since diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus, dependence on basic activities of daily living, dependence on instrumented activities of daily living, and adherence to drug treatment. The Barthel index, modified Katz, Lawton, and the questionnaire to assess therapeutic adherence, the data were summarized in tables, applying a descriptive statistical analysis.
Results:
the elderly with ages between 70 and 74 years old (33,3 %) and those with less than five years of diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus (50 %) predominated. The majority are independent in the basic activities of daily living 66,6 % and 60,4 % are independent in the instrumented activities of daily living. Those with complete adherence to treatment prevailed (58,3 %).
Conclusions:
Diabetes Mellitus in the elderly of the medical office 12 of the Pedro Borrás Astorga Polyclinic, Pinar del Río, constitutes a health problem and despite this they maintain an adequate quality of life.
