Introduction:

José Martí wrote “The past is the root of the present. It must be known what was, because what was is in what it is”…The history of general surgery is described and in Cuba as well, but these do not include relevant elements of the surgical context of the province of Pinar del Río where students, residents and specialists have been trained since the 70s of the last century.

Objective:

to describe the historical evolution of general surgery in the province of Pinar del Río, for current and future generations of undergraduate and graduate students as well as specialists and interested parties.

Methods:

a qualitative, historical and situational, descriptive research was carried out; with the use of testimonies from the people who were part of it, particularly the authors and secondary sources for the collection of information. This allowed a synthesis of its development over the years.

Result:

the evolution of general surgery in the province was slow in the first half of the 20th century but with progressive development. However the training of specialists after the 1960s until 2020 quadrupled the figure, in addition to covering surgical assistance in various municipalities in the province.

Conclusions:

the province of Pinar del Río has a history of the Neat general surgery from the 20th century and especially after the triumph of the Revolution in 1959.
