Abstract

RODRIGUEZ BELLO, Haydeé Isabel et al. Stomatologic emergencies in older adults. North area of Sancti Spíritus. 2011. Gac Méd Espirit [online]. 2013, vol.15, n.3, pp.305-316. ISSN 1608-8921.

Background: as a result of the technical-scientific development, from the social achievements of the last decades, the continuing decline in fertility and the increase of life expectancy, it has been increased in Cuba the amount of older adults; therefore it is a necessity to improve their life quality. Objective: to determine the stomatologic emergencies behavior in the older adult population of the North area of Sancti Spíritus in the period from June 2010 to January 2011. Methodology: an observational, descriptive and transversal study was made in a population of 175 patients older than 60 years, from both sexes who demanded stomatologic emergency care. These variables were described: age, gender, emergency origin, risk factors and knowledge level about dental health. Results: odontalgia by tooth decay as the main stomatologic emergency predominated. The most frequent risk factors were tooth decay antecedents, poor oral hygiene and cariogenic diet. Conclusions: in most of the studied population the stomatologic emergencies could be related to poor oral health knowledge.
