Background: Recent discoveries show effects of the diabetes mellitus in the cognitive functions. Objective: To identify the cognitive alterations that distinguish the patients with diabetes type 2 which are attended in the Integral Attention Center to Diabetics from Sancti Spíritus and their relationship with the acting of the instrumental activities of the daily life. Methodology: It was carried out a descriptive-correlational study that included 30 patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 and 30 healthy controls. A battery of cognitive test and the index for the instrumental activities of the daily life of Lawton Brody was used for the neuropsychological evaluation. Results: The most significant alterations (p <0.05) of the patients were in the speed of prosecution of the information, attention, short memory and I release term, the abstract reasoning and the executive functions; in this last domain a size of big effect was evidenced (d>0.80). An smaller autonomy was shown in the acting of the instrumental activities of the daily life in the diabetic patients. Conclusions: The investigation showed alterations in the cognitive functions in patients with diabetes type 2; however a correlation was not identified with the acting of the instrumental activities of their daily life.
