Abstract

Background:

Xerostomia is a health problem in a part of the geriatric population, at present, there is a worldwide tendency to increase it in developing countries.

Objective:

To characterize the behavior of the xerostomia in the geriatric population, at the Aged Community House in Marianao municipality.

Methodology:

Descriptive and cross-sectional study in 59 patients belonging to the aged home community. The variables used were: age, sex, salivary secretion, drug consumption and oral diseases.

Results:

93.2% of the population corresponded to the female sex, the most affected age was between 70 and 79 years (30.5%), the most consumed drugs were the antihypertensive drugs (55.3%) and diuretics (35.7%), 40.6% of patients who presented xerostomia suffer from masticatory dysfunction.

Conclusions:

The female sex predominated with xerostomia and the study group is mostly exposed to polypharmacy, reducing the salivary flow and affecting the masticatory dysfunction.
