GARCIA RODRIGUEZ, Miguel Emilio  y  GARCIA BASULTO, Miguel Javier. Vaginal hysterectomy. Historical notes. Gac Méd Espirit [online]. 2019, vol.21, n.1, pp.59-69.  Epub 01-Abr-2019. ISSN 1608-8921.

Background:

Hysterectomy, after cesarean section surgery, is the most performed gynecological surgery; this can be done in different ways: abdominal, vaginal and laparoscopic; of all of them the vaginal one has a historical significance.

Objective:

To analyze the different historical stages of vaginal hysterectomy as a surgical technique.

Methodology:

Documents published in English and Spanish in different databases (PubMed, Medline, Redalyc, Hinari, Ebsco) were reviewed. Those which contributed historical data were chosen. The historical-logical method for the analysis of the different stages of the development of vaginal hysterectomy and the analysis and synthesis to determine the relationships between the different stages that characterized the technique and its contribution to the current technique were used.

Results:

A total of 223 articles were reviewed, of which 42, containing historical data and the characteristics of the procedures, as well as the dates were selected.

Conclusions:

The development of vaginal hysterectomy has undergone changes over time in the indications and the way to perform it which has influenced that, currently in many countries, has become the technique of choice for hysterectomy.
