Detailed planning of water resources needed for the first irrigation of rice is a pending subject in the updating process of irrigation systems for this crop. To answer this need, the present work introduces a methodology based on the integration of a procedure for irrigation design in rice terraces along with a geographic information system (GIS). Parameters for water resources planning are obtained from algebraic operations between maps and the detailed quantification and resources needed for each field. Its application to a group of rice fields allowed to obtain necessary water volumes and discharges for the first irrigation of rice and, from these, to evaluate functionality of the existing irrigation system.
