Abstract

MUNOZ CARAVACA, Alain; MARIN MACHIN, María Carla  and  CARAVACA COLINA, Lester. Storm surgemodeling in Cienfuegos bay in Cuba. riha [online]. 2018, vol.39, n.1, pp.32-42. ISSN 1680-0338.

The purpose of the present work is to understand the effect of hurricanes in generatingastorm surge over Cienfuegos bay using numerical modeling. The numerical code ADCIRC is used which is forced by 13 tidal components at the open boundary and a wind field generated by a parametric model. Three case studies were simulated: hurricane Lili 1996, hurricane Michelle 2001 and hurricane Dennis 2005. The simulated surge and sea level rise fields vary between 0,80 and 1,80 m and are in agreement with the few observations that have been made at the site. The trajectory and intensity of the hurricanes are determining factors in the characteristics of the surge in Cienfuegosbay. Both factors are proportional to the value of the water elevation in the bay.

Keywords : ADCIRC; Cienfuegos bay; tropical storm; surge.
