DIAZ DUQUE, José Antonio. The water in Cuba: a challenge to sustainability. riha [online]. 2018, vol.39, n.2, pp. 46-59. ISSN 1680-0338.
The available water resources in Cuba are limited and are distributed heterogeneously. The national average of 1 220 m3 of water per person a year locates the country in a moderate hydric stress. Different kind of problems related with the sustainable management of water are present in Cuba: the low volume of available water per inhabitant a year, the low index of annual replacement of water resources with 13,7 %, the little efficiency in the use of the water and the losses in the distribution and consumption networks, among others. In consequence, the water constitutes for Cuba the environmental main challenge to guarantee its sustainable development, as well as its environmental and alimentary security. The climate change makes stronger this challenge. It is proposed a pathway for the sustainable management of the water resources in Cuba
