The first part of this study reviews some of the most important geologic, geomorphologic, hydrologic, hydraulic and geophysical characteristics of Ecuador, and particularly of the tectonically unstable Pacific slope ant its relation with the hazard prevention and mitigation of the damaging effects of earthquakes and its side-effects on the hydraulic infrastructure and the preservation of water resources (amount and quality) of Western Ecuador.
