The preliminary design head for run-of reservoir hydropower projects in Cuba is determined as the time-weighted average of net head obtained through reservoir simulation. This paper proposes three alternative methods for obtaining the optimal preliminary design head as follows: 1- by the frequency histogram of the net head, 2- by the net head duration curve and 3- by the generalized reduced gradient method (non-linear programming). Any of these three methods offers a better approximation to this parameter.
