^les^aSe realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal, en escolares de la primaria Antonio López Coloma, del Consejo Popular México, municipio Colón, provincia Matanzas, de marzo a junio de 2009, con el objetivo de identificar el comportamiento de la caries dental y sus factores de riesgo, así como el nivel de conocimiento sobre salud bucal en estos escolares. El universo estuvo constituido por 214 niños entre las edades de 5 a 12 años, los que fueron estudiados en su totalidad. Las variables utilizadas fueron: edad, sexo, factores de riesgo de la caries dental y nivel de conocimiento sobre salud bucal. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron que el 65,9 % de los niños estaban afectados, perteneciendo al sexo masculino el 71,0 %, y en las edades de 7 a 8 años se comportó con 85,5 %; predominó la higiene bucal inadecuada, para un 64,5 %; la dieta cariogénica, para un 57,0 % y el 88,8 % de los estudiantes tenían un nivel de conocimientos no satisfactorio sobre salud bucal. Se concluyó que el sexo masculino así como el grupo de edades de 7 a 8 años fueron los más afectados por caries dental; los factores de riesgo predominantes fueron la higiene bucal y la dieta cariogénica. La mayoría de los estudiantes tenían información no satisfactoria e inadecuada sobre la higiene bucal.^len^aWe carried out a cross-sectional, descriptive and observational research, in students of the primary school Antonio López Coloma, of the Mexico Popular Council, municipality of Colón, province of Matanzas, in the period March-June 2009, with the objective of identifying the dental caries behavior and its risk factors, and also the level of oral health knowledge these students have. The universe was formed by 214 children in ages from 5 to 12 years, who were all studied. The used variables were: age, genre, dental caries risk factors and level of knowledge on oral health.  The obtained results showed that 65,9 % of the children had troubles, 71,0 % were male, 85,5 % were in the age group of 7-8 years old; there was a predomination of the inadequate oral health, for a 64,5 %; the cariogenic  diet, for a 57,0 %, and the 88,8 % of the students had a non-satisfactory level of knowledge on oral health. We concluded that the male sex, and also the 7-8 years-old age group were the most affected per dental caries: the predominant risk factors were the oral hygiene and the cariogenic diet.  Most of the students had non-satisfactory and inadequate information on the oral hygiene.
