TRAVIESAS HERRERA, Eladio Miguel et al. Intersectorial communitarian intervention in adults to decrease smoking and periodontal diseases. Boquerón, Monagas, Venezuela. 2009. Rev. Med. Electrón. [online]. 2012, vol.34, n.2, pp.162-172. ISSN 1684-1824.

Introduction: Currently, several risk factors for the periodontal diseases have being identified, and among we can list the gingival sulcus microbiota, the diabetes mellitus, the stress, the genetic factors, the viral agents and smoking. The last one is able of perpetuating or worsening the periodontal disease, so it is necessary to develop a communitarian intervention with an intersectorial character, where several activities will be developed with the massive participation of the population. Objective: Developing an interventional strategy to decrease smoking and periodontal diseases, in Maturín, Monagas, Venezuela, during 2009. Methods: We carried out an experimental study of communitarian intervention. The universe of this research was formed by 279 smoking persons who were 19 years old or more and assisted the stomatological service in the period from September 2008 to March 2009. The sample was formed by 159 smoking patients. Results: All the population was affected with a predominance of the chronic gingivitis; the severe intensity of smoking was the one more frequently found, representing 61,1 %. After the intervention and the healing activity developed, 5,33 % of the population achieved the condition of healthy, improving the periodontal situation, with a significant statistic association. Conclusions: The periodontal situation improved and we appreciated a reduction of the numbers of smoked cigarettes after the intervention, besides a considerable decrease in the smokers quantity, so it is considered effective.
